ABOUT ME
My Story
I've spent 30 years learning everything I can about jazz, electronic music, production, composition...
I've released music on labels such as Metamorphic (Dan Curtin's label), Winthorpe Electronics, D1, and I run my own label Zoitrax
I've also taught 1000s of hours of classes and ran my own guitar school in Dublin for 10 years.
I put all my teaching skills and knowledge into this course to give you the information I think is THE most important when it comes to making electronic music. I focus on the things that will make your music sound good, but also unique - it's more important to sound like yourself rather than like every other "well-produced" track out there.
7-Month Course
How it works
The course is delivered with video content that you can watch at your own pace. There are assignments to do each month. One month per module is my recommended pace but you can go faster or slower if you prefer!
There are also monthly group Zoom calls where you can ask questions and get inspired, and a Discord server where you can post your own assignments for feedback and interact with other students.
Course Requirments:
1. Have a DAW (like Ableton, Logic, Reaper, FL Studio or similar)
2. Be able to load a plug in (like a free VST)
3. Be able to make a simple sequence
If you need help with achieving these basic requirements, email me for other options (zoid@zoid.ie) otherwise you'll be good to go!
If you are an advanced producer with years of experience the course might still be good for you, I've had some people with many records released do the course and learn lots of new stuff! Contact me if you're wondering whether you are too advanced.
Proven Results
I do an anonymous survey at the end of each module, and here's what people say:
I liked the informal and open approach and method of delivery. It inspired me to try some new things like using voice memos to record ideas. I also enjoyed the mapping of an arrangement idea although I have yet to do this myself… but I will!
The outline/title of every video is descriptive, the videos are bite sized, the video has that notes you're showing. it's showing how you turn the idea into music in your DAW
Well thought out advice and clear delivery. The last vid about structure I found particularly helpful
It really got me thinking and focused
Excellent, thought provoking videos
Everything is very nice so far, really enjoying it.
I enjoyed the variety of the assignments and what was required was clear and easy to follow
Although I studied Sound Engineering a couple of decades ago and work as a technician (video) so have a head for technical concepts, I tend to have a very DIY approach when it comes to making music. I find it fun to not know and I just enjoy by making mistakes, experimenting and playing around! I've stumbled across some of the basic concepts of Sound Design (layering, pitching, envelope - also speed manipulation) almost by accident so I felt this module kind of validated my efforts to an extent… which was a relief! At the same time, I appreciated the guidance given. it gave me a perspective on a more direct way of looking at music making. It's great to have that foundation now. Where the module really shined was in its concise but laid back approach - a lot of ground was covered in a relatively short space of time. It was devoid of irrelevant information and was easy to follow. I only had to watch it once to grasp what was going on so thanks for that!
